The AV1 re-conversion effort is finished!

AV1 Re-econding Effort

Over the course of two months, we were able to re-convert over 3,300 videos from source to AV1.

This comes with some nice benefits:

  • Lower filesize
  • Higher quality retained
  • Original frame rate retained
  • Resolutions above 1080p in some cases

Also, lower filesizes also means less bandwidth used on streaming videos, so the site should be able to handle streaming a little better.

600 Creators

The site now has over 600 creators! You can find the updated list on the HMV Makers List page.

Server Plans and Release Rate

In July, the release rate per day was bumped up to 5 to get through more of the queue. We usually base our forecasts on a release rate of 4, and we’d like to go back to 4 videos per day on average, but will consider 5 videos in one day if needed.

Given estimates from the AV1 reconversion effort, we estimate that to get to the “safe max”, it would take:
– 2,833 videos (average 60 MB per video)
– 1,460 videos per year (365 days * 4 videos per day average)
– roughly 23 months, or until June / July 2026

This means the current server can last us a long time with these forecasts. However, there is a project that the backend dev is working on that should allow us to migrate to a different server in 2025. Even though the plans for this year didn’t go as we initially hoped on that front, the AV1 reconversion effort allowed us to get significantly more time and ease some concerns.

As of this post’s writing, the site has 3,392 published videos (not including Welcome to HMV Mania). That means getting to the “safe max” with the above forecast would indicate the site would have over 6,000 videos to get to that point. We’ve managed to get to the current ~3.4k videos over the course of three years with an incremental release schedule.

It’s been quite a journey, and we thank you for your continued interest in the site even with the site’s limitations. We look forward to continue providing you a safe, ad-free streaming experience.

I’m very very to hmv and just started watching yesterday but it’s so amazing and yall are doing god work. However this site specifically has lagging and stuttering problems nothing else has and it’s a huge shame any fix or prevention for this?

Why not use opus too? isn’t that practically a no-brainer if you’re doing av1 too

The testing we did back then during this effort was when we tested against what we knew, which was AAC audio. We can start using the -c:a libopus flag soon for future videos, as we’ve already converted a large batch of videos for the coming days.

Sorry for the unrelated comment, but I’m creating some AMVs I’d like to upload here but the site isn’t allowing me to sign up.
How could I create an account on here?

    Let me know please, thanks.
